CHMS Principal Rex Scott is Honored by the Learn Center as Person of the Year

Thursday evening at the DoubleTree Hotel, Principal Rex Scott was named the Person of the Year for the Learn Center program by teacher and program director Marge Gould. This program is celebrating its 26th year at Catalina. There is no other program like it in TUSD or Tucson. It teaches students to succeed in the business world from how to dress for the job, how to introduce yourself to a potential employer, how to conduct yourself at a job interview, and how to write business letters. At the ceremony five outstanding seniors were presented with laptops and some were given scholarships. Because of Rex Scott’s support of the program, he was selected for the honor. TUSD superintendent Dr. John Pedicone was in the audience to offer congratulations to Rex and the laptop and scholarship winners. Kudos to Rex Scott and the students.

CONSTRUCTION TRADES CLASSES FORM PARTNERSHIP WITH U OF A AND CREATE FUTURE JOBS FOR CMHS STUDENTS

Last September, the CMHS Construction Technology department gain ed The University of Arizona as a new partner. Through Catalina’s industry partner, Arizona

Builders Alliance, the U of A contacted construction teacher John Draper. UA Facilities staff members explained that they have 543 facilities employees, 50% of whom will retire over the next 10 years, and they will need to hire qualified employees with good construction skills to replace these retirees. They advertised for a journeyman electrician and hired a 67 year-old as the only qualified candidate. Because of this, Catalina is creating an employee pipeline through our Advanced Construction classes. By next year Catalina will have a formalized program, offering jobshadowing for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Seniors will then have internships available to them.

The Catalina High School Foundation Trojan Hall of Fame was established to inspire students by recognizing accomplishments of alumni who have made exceptional accomplishments, who serve as positive role models, or individuals who have made notable contributions to the Catalina community or to their chosen profession.

Save Room for Dessert

Plans for the March 16, 2013 CHS Foundation’s Spring Social, Blue Ribbon Desserts, are well underway.

Guest speaker, Stan Strom from the Class of 1977, will share stories about being named American Pie Champion at the 2010 Crisco National Pie Championships in Orlando, FL, after winning baking contests at the Arizona State Fair.

Stan will bring samples of his cookies, bars, brownies, pies, and cheesecake and will autograph his book Blue Ribbon Desserts: An impressive collection of award winning pies, cakes, cheesecakes and cookies.

Mark your calendar for March 16th and “Save Room for Dessert.” Reservations to greenenchalada@aol.com are required.
